You’re Going Through
Something Big
Life feels upside down.
You don’t feel okay.
Watch: Lisa Rosenzweig, PhD, welcomes you and shares how therapy tailored to your health concerns can help you navigate illness, pain, or medical stress.
Accessibility Note: Video of Dr. Lisa Rosenzweig, a New York City psychologist, speaking directly to the camera from her telehealth office. She specializes in therapy for illness, pain, and medical stress, and offers compassionate support to help individuals feel more confident and connected during health challenges.
You’re used to playing by the rules and achieving what you set your mind to and work toward, but then life threw you a really big curveball. You got sick. And now you’re not sure what to do anymore.
It’s hard to know what to do next. Or it’s clear what to do next—your doctor has a plan—but then what?
It’s so uncomfortable to feel uncertain about something as fundamental as your health or your very survival that it affects everything. You put on a brave face, but it’s scary to see the people around you scared for you. They’re tiptoeing around the issue or giving their unsolicited advice that, while well-meaning, painfully misses the mark. And how do you handle it at work? Do you tell people or keep things quiet? Can you keep working through all these medical appointments and treatment side effects? Or maybe the question is: how do you keep working, as now you really need to keep your health insurance?
You’ve never faced something so big or upending before and you’re not really certain how you’ll get through. You feel afraid and overwhelmed and alone. No one else seems to understand what you’re going through, not even your old therapist who was great with other concerns, but might not be familiar with your health issues. You’re not certain what you need, but you know you need help from someone who gets it and can help guide you through.
I’m Lisa, a Psychologist in New York, and I offer mind-body therapy that supports your whole self—emotionally, physically, and practically.
I help people affected by medical concerns like cancer, chronic illness, chronic pain, disability, and reproductive health problems to find a way forward when everything feels backwards or upside down. I can support you to find your way to feeling better and clearer about what you need and how to get it.
I don’t have all the answers, but my expertise is in helping you find them. I help you feel more grounded and centered and prepared to take on this challenge you never asked for and wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Ways I can support you through health challenges:
Living with health issues affects every aspect of your life, and therapy can be a place to bring it all together.
Whether you’re still struggling to make sense of your symptoms, newly diagnosed, living with a long-term illness, caregiving, grieving, or just trying to cope with your health day-to-day, our work can support your emotional, physical, and relational well-being.
Everyone’s experience with their health is different. Some of what’s listed here might speak directly to what you’re going through, and some might not. That’s okay. Therapy with me doesn’t follow a script. We’ll figure out together what kind of support makes the most sense for you.
-
Medical issues can make everyday life harder. I can help you find tools and strategies for decision-making, daily routines, communication, managing symptoms and limited energy, and setting boundaries in a way that works for you.
-
I can share mind-body tools and approaches (like guided imagery, meditation, mindfulness, self-hypnosis, breathing techniques, and relaxation exercises) to help ease anxiety, calm your nervous system, manage physical symptoms, and support your body in healing.
-
Whether you’re dealing with grief, medical trauma, anger, or the weight of your experience, this is a place to talk openly about what it’s like to live in your body and your life right now and feel heard and understood without judgment.
-
Together, we’ll explore new ways to manage your challenges, build on your strengths, shift unhelpful thinking, and live in a way that reflects your values and priorities.
-
With your permission, I can work directly with your doctors and collaborate with your care team to help you manage your health more effectively.
-
Chronic or life-changing conditions can shape or reshape how we see ourselves. Together, we can examine how your experiences have shaped you and what feels most authentic and meaningful to you in your life going forward.
-
We can work on strengthening relationships, intimacy, support systems, and caregiving dynamics, whether with partners, family, or friends.
-
You deserve to be taken seriously. I can help you prepare for appointments and treatments, communicate effectively with your doctors, navigate a complex healthcare system, and deal with the all-too-common experience of being dismissed or not believed.
-
If your body or abilities have changed, we can work through grief, frustration, or shifts in identity, and find ways to adapt that feel right for you.
-
Whether you’ve been dismissed or mistreated because of your race, gender, size, disability, sexuality, or identity, or you’ve been through frightening or disempowering medical experiences, therapy can be a space to make sense of what happened, begin to heal, and reclaim a sense of control over your care and your story.
I don’t have a “one-size-fits-all” approach. I have training and experience that helps me tailor my approach to what you need. Together, we work toward your goals.
With the support of a therapist who “gets” medical issues, you don’t have to do this alone.
